First Disney Cruise? 15 Tips I Wish I’d Known Before Boarding

Your first Disney cruise is going to be magical — but a little insider knowledge turns “magical” into “magical and totally stress-free.” Here’s everything I wish someone had told me before my first sailing.

Before you sail

1. Do online check-in the moment it opens

Online check-in opens on a schedule based on your Castaway Club level and how far out you booked. When you check in, you pick a Port Arrival Time — and the earlier slots go fast. Set a reminder so you’re ready the minute your window opens.

2. Book your “extras” on your booking day

Adult dining (like Palo), spa treatments, excursions and nursery hours can all be booked ahead online. Popular items fill up early, especially on short sailings, so check the planning section of your reservation as soon as it unlocks.

3. Download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app before you leave home

This is your daily schedule, onboard chat, dining info and map all in one. Log in and get familiar with it on land — once you’re on ship Wi-Fi, the app works for basics even without buying an internet package.

Screenshot your boarding documents, passports and travel insurance info too. Port Wi-Fi is never as good as you hope.

4. Fly in the day before. Always.

The ship won’t wait for a delayed flight. Arriving the day before gives you a buffer and a relaxed morning. I wrote a whole guide on where to stay in Orlando before a Port Canaveral cruise.

5. Pack a carry-on “day bag”

Your checked luggage may not reach your stateroom until late afternoon. Keep swimsuits, sunscreen, medications, chargers and a change of clothes in a carry-on so you can hit the pool right away. My full packing list has a printable checklist.

6. Eat lunch, then explore

Once you board, grab lunch — the buffet and quick-service spots open for embarkation day. Then take your time exploring before the crowds spread out.

7. Don’t miss the Sail Away Celebration

Head up to the pool deck before departure for the deck party. Watching the ship pull away while the characters dance and the horn plays a Disney tune is a core memory moment.

8. Know where your muster station is

The safety drill is required. Check the Navigator app for your assigned assembly station so you can get it done quickly.

9. Understand rotational dining

Your servers travel with you to a different themed restaurant each night. It’s one of my favorite things about Disney cruising — here’s how it works.

10. Soda is included — so is a lot of food

Fountain soda, coffee, tea and juice at the beverage stations are included, as are the main dining rooms, buffets and quick-service spots. Specialty dining, alcohol and specialty coffees cost extra.

11. Plan for Pirate Night

Most sailings include a pirate-themed night with special dining and themed fun. Pack a bandana or pirate tee for everyone — kids and adults go all in.

12. Bring magnetic hooks

Stateroom walls are metal. Magnetic hooks give you extra space for hats, lanyards and swimsuits. Easily one of the best $10 you’ll spend.

13. Use the kids’ clubs (seriously)

The youth clubs are included in your fare and are wildly popular with kids. Register ahead of time online so check-in at the club is quick.

14. Watch the shows — but check showtimes

The Broadway-style stage shows are included and incredible. There are usually two showings tied to dining times, so check the Navigator app for the one that matches your seating.

15. Don’t overschedule

The biggest first-timer mistake? Trying to do everything. Leave room for a lazy pool afternoon or an ocean-view nap. That’s the magic too.

“Plan the big rocks, then let the cruise happen.” — my motto after one too many over-planned sea days.

Policies, prices and app features change often. Always double-check the latest details in your Disney Cruise Line reservation before you sail.
